For no one despises or hates or flees pleasure itself because it is pleasure, but because great pains follow those who do not know how to follow pleasure with reason. Nor is there any one who loves pain itself because it is pain,
But we both accuse and consider most deserving of just hatred those who, soothed and corrupted by the allurements of present pleasures, blinded by greed, do not foresee what pains and annoyances they will be spared, and are in a similar fault who abandon their duties through the softness of mind, that is, the flight from labors and pains. And the distinction between these things is indeed easy and ready. For in free time, when the option of choosing is free for us and when nothing prevents us from being able to do what pleases us most, all pleasure is to be embraced, all pain is to be repelled. But at certain times, either due to duties or the necessities of life, it will often happen that both pleasures are to be rejected and annoyances are not to be refused. Therefore, the wise man is bound by the choice of these things, so that either by rejecting greater pleasures he may obtain others, or by enduring more severe pains he may repel them.

For to be fair to the smallest, who of us undertakes any laborious exercise of the body, unless to derive some benefit from it? But who would rightly blame either him who wishes to be in that pleasure which results in no discomfort, or him who flees that pain which produces no pleasure?
